Situation of Abandoned Cats in Marrakech
In Marrakech, stray cats are part of the urban landscape.
In the medina, around Jemaa el-Fna, in residential neighborhoods, and in commercial areas, they survive in very precarious conditions.
Why are there so many abandoned cats?
1️⃣ Uncontrolled reproduction
Without large-scale sterilization, the population grows rapidly.
2️⃣ Abandonment
Some domestic cats are abandoned when they become sick or too expensive to care for.
3️⃣ Lack of public infrastructure
There are very few organized shelters and limited municipal programs.
Health consequences
- Chronic respiratory infections
- Blood parasites
- Injuries from fights
- Severe malnutrition
Kittens are the most vulnerable.
The role of associations
Independent organizations step in to:
- Provide medical care
- Sterilize cats
- Offer safe shelter
- Find responsible adopters
A situation that requires international support
Local economic pressure limits the ability to provide sufficient help.
International donations make it possible to:
- Fund surgeries
- Purchase medications
- Save lives in a concrete way
